Your feet are among your most important body parts. Staying healthy provides to move freely. However, most of us takes our feet for granted that will eventually lead to an injury or problem. Most of us don't think about this but foot health is really important for everyone.
Taking care of your foot is essential to prevent foot health issues and also allows you to keep your whole body healthy. Foot health for people with diabetes is even more vital as they are prone with serious injuries even having a small cut on their feet.
Dr. J Leonard Knudson, DPM is a Board Certified Podiatric Surgeon, practicing in Culver City Since 1982. Dedicated to life long learning, Dr. Knudson has earned degrees in Pharmacy, Podiatry and Medicine and has two doctorate level degrees. 1. INSPECT YOUR FEET REGULARLY
If you notice any problems such as blisters, redness, small cuts, or cracked skin contact Dr. J Leonard Knudson, DPM immediately to conduct a thorough examination on your foot. Check your feet daily or use a hand mirror with magnification if you have diabetes, never ignore any problems with your feet.
2. ALWAYS WEAR WELL-FITTED SHOES
Shoes that don't fit well may cause blisters that can lead to infection or other problems. Make sure you choose shoes that do not irritate your feet. Wear shoes that properly support your feet and ankles to ensure safety while walking. Always ensure that your shoes fit properly for general wear or any sports-specific activities.
Dr Leonard Knudson of Associated Foot Care Clinic, Inc can also recommend you shoes or shoe inserts (orthotics) for proper support.
3. CLEAN YOUR FEET DAILY AND WEAR CLEAN, DRY SOCKS
Wash your feet daily in lukewarm water. Avoid using hot or cold water. Water that is too hot or too cold can damage your skin, especially in people with diabetes who have decreased skin sensation. When your feet is sweat, use a soft washcloth or sponge and gentle soap. Then, rinse thoroughly and dry your feet completely before donning socks and shoes.
Socks that are bunched up or too tight around the ankles or calf also can cause irritation or problems. The Associated Foot Care Clinic, Inc. warns that having diabetes increases the risk of developing a wide range of foot problems.
4. MOISTURIZE YOUR FEET AT NIGHT
Prevent your feet from itching and cracking by moisturizing them every night and avoid putting lotion in between your toes to keep your skin soft and healthy.
5. CUT NAILS CAREFULLY AND REGULARLY
It is best to cut nails straight across and then carefully file the edges. Nails that are cut too short can become ingrown and cause soreness or infection. Keep your nails trimmed, but not too short. If you cannot cut your own nails, Dr Leonard Knudson can assist.
