Foot tendons comprise the posterior tibial tendon, peroneal tendons and the Achilles tendon. Injuries to these tendons tend to be due to intense athletic activities or overuse. Falls, sudden pressure or repetitive and intense use of the foot and ankle that stresses the tendons can cause tears.

Tendon tear symptoms include:

Pain: The moment the injury happens can be very painful and the injured area can be sore while the injury heals.

Swelling, redness and warmth: The area of the injury can swell and turn red after it is injured and may be warm to the touch as well.

Weakness: Due to the injury your foot may feel weak and unstable, resulting in a limitation of ordinary activities.

Foot tendon tear treatments include:

Rest and ice: A break from activities that put strain and pressure on the injured tendon is necessary to allow healing. Cold packs will help reduce pain and swelling, these should be applied as soon as possible after the injury happens and then 3-4 times a day.

NSAIDs: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen can help with the pain and swelling.

Braces, casts and orthotics: These can help support the foot while it is healing.

Steroid (cortisone): Injections of cortisone can reduce inflammation and pain due to tendon injury.

Physical therapy: Exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles and tendons can help with the injury.

Surgery: If the tendon has ruptured or the pain and swelling do not go away then surgery may be required to repair or replace a tendon.
