Feeling pain or discomfort from a bunion on your foot? Let Dr. J. Leonard Knudson, DPM, take a look to see what kind of treatment is necessary. At his Culver City practice, Dr. Knudson provides bunion treatment for patients.
What Are Bunions?
These are bony bumps that form on the joint of the big toe's base. This can occur when bones at the front part of the foot move out of place, causing the tip of the big toe being pulled in the direction of the smaller toes, which aligns the base of the big toe outwards, causing it to protrude. Due to this the skin over the bunion may be red and sore.
This condition can be caused or worsened by wearing tight and narrow shoes. Bunions can also occur due to foot shape, deformities or medical conditions like arthritis.

How are Bunions Treated?
After a podiatrist identifies the bunion by examining the patient's foot, a process that includes physical exams and X-rays, a treatment plan can be devised to treat the bunion in the best way possible.
Conservative bunion treatment options include non-surgical interventions to relieve the pain and pressure causing or worsening the bunion. This can include changing shoes, wearing padding, medications for the pain and inflammation, shoe inserts and applying ice for the swelling. If these are insufficient, surgical treatments may be necessary - namely when the bunion is no longer a cosmetic concern but causes pain and interferes with daily activities.
Bunion surgery can involve removing swollen tissue around the big toe joint, straightening the big toe by removing some of the bone, realigning the bones of the foot to correct their positioning, or joining the bones of the affected joint.
