What are Custom Orthotics and When Are They Needed?

For certain causes of foot aches, podiatrists can address the issue by prescribing orthotics. What are Custom Orthotics

These are prescription medical devices worn inside shoes to address issues with walking, standing or running. They can also help with pain in the feet caused by conditions such as diabetes, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, and arthritis. They can even help patients avoid surgery to fix flat feet.

Ordinary shoe inserts are made of gel, plastic or foam to provide arch support or cushioning around the heel or toe areas. They can make shoes feel more comfortable but they are not designed for correcting foot problems.

Orthotics come in various types. Primarily there are rigid orthotics and soft orthotics.

Rigid orthotics or functional orthotics are composed of plastic or carbon fiber and are suited for shoes with closed toes and low heels. They ease foot aches and strains, as well as pain in the legs, thighs and lower back caused by differences in the function of the feet.

Soft orthotics or accommodative orthotics use soft compression materials to provide cushioning or take pressure off areas that are uncomfortable or sore due to conditions such as plantar fasciitis or diabetic foot ulcers. They tend to be bulky so soft orthotics will also need prescription footwear.

There are also specialized orthotics for sporting gear such as ski boots and ice skates.

What Your Podiatrist Will Assess for Custom Orthotics

During your appointment, Dr. Knudson will take 3D images of each foot and thoroughly exam your feet. The assessment will evaluate your gait, how your feet, ankles, legs and hips move, and what is causing the foot pain. If orthotics are required, your podiatrist will make precise molds of your feet in order to create custom devices that fit properly.
