The human body relies on the feet for mobility, subjecting these limbs to wear and tear on a daily basis, and while they are resilient there are parts of the feet that can be delicate. The toes in particular, which can experience metatarsal fractures during strenuous activity, athletic practices or accidents. These are breaks or thin hairline cracks on the metatarsal bones of the foot, causing pain and swelling as well as disturbing mobility.
At Associated Foot Care, Dr. J. Leonard Knudson's medical practice near Santa Monica, Southern California, treatments and services for metatarsal fractures are available to aid in the recovery process.
Treatment for for Metatarsal Fractures, Toe Fractures and Foot Fractures Near Santa Monica
Usually caused by repeated stress on the bones of the foot or during jumps and abrupt changes in direction that put stress on the foot and ankle, metatarsal fractures can be painful and cause people to limp or lose mobility. This fracture is common in dancers, athletes and martial artists.
Treatment will vary depending on the severity of the fracture and its location on the metatarsal bone, which will require X-rays.
This is necessary because the fracture can often be overlooked or mistaken for a sprain, delaying proper care.
Surgery may or may not be required and your Culver City foot doctor might have to put the injured foot in a cast or splint to stabilize it. Crutches may be required to keep weight off the foot.
Metatarsal fractures can take 6 weeks to several months to fully heal and it is important to give the injured limb time to heal completely to avoid re-injuring it.
Physiotherapy may be necessary to restore strength and range of motion in the foot.
Pain medication may be prescribed if the discomfort is unbearable.
Ice or cold packs are recommended, putting them on the injured area for 10-20 minutes at a time every hour or two for the next three days after the injury or until swelling goes down.
Your Culver City foot doctor will recommend the amount of weight that your foot can bear and when normal activities can resume.
