FOOT ARCH DISORDERS
WHAT IS ARCH DISORDER?
An arch disorder can occur due to a foot deformity and may be present from birth. It would become a problem as the child gets older.
This include problems like High Arches (abnormal high arch of the foot), Flat Feet (little to no arch of the foot), and Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (changes in the posterior tibial tendon).
Arch disorders could be caused by injury and trauma that may affect the structure of the feet, causing arch pain, like bone fractures, ligament and tendon tears, nerve tears, or plantar fasciitis.

Arch disorders could be caused by lifestyle, illnesses and habits such as obesity, playing high intensity sports, age, and illnesses like RA and diabetes.

MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS
OF ARCH DISORDER
Arch disorders could be present from birth, but normally manifest in teenagers or may even show uplater for the first time in adults.
-
Foot pain when walking, standing, exercising, or playing sports.
-
Pain in the arch, ankle, heel, or outside of foot.
-
Difficulty finding shoes that fit properly.
-
Calluses on the ball of the foot, side, or heel.
TREATMENT FOR FLAT FEET

A dropped arched can’t be reversed, but the condition can be managed.
Conservative treatment includes different stretching exercises, rest, activity modification, weight loss, ankle brace, anti-inflammatory medication, fitted insoles, or custom orthotics.
Surgery is only recommended if a patient has a significant deformity or pain can’t be resolved using a combination of conservative treatments.
TREATMENT FOR CAVUS FOOT (HIGH ARCH)

NORMAL ARCH
HIGH ARCH
A podiatrist may recommend a custom orthotic device to provide stability and cushioning, bracing and shoes that support the ankle and provide better stability to the foot.
Treatment will depend on a diagnosis and evaluation. X-rays may be used to assess the condition. A neurological evaluation might also be recommended.
Surgery may be recommended if a patient is still experiencing pain after using non-operative methods to reduce pain.
